Corrective exercise is like basic hygiene for your body—just as essential as brushing your teeth. By regularly realigning and recentering your body, you can prevent pain, injury, and even reduce long-term health care costs. Ideally, we would have learned these exercises in grade school to promote healthy aging and movement.
Throughout our lives, many activities can throw our bodies off balance. Whether it’s driving, manual labor,
sports, biking, desk work, or carrying a baby, every activity requires us to take on a certain posture or shape. The problem arises when we remain stuck in those positions or lack the necessary strength and alignment to maintain them properly.
Corrective exercise helps you reset and realign your body, developing the awareness, strength, and dynamic function needed to move well and prevent injury. It’s a customized approach tailored to your specific needs, allowing you to address and rebalance the natural imbalances we all have. With just the right exercises, you can make a profound impact on your health and longevity.
When to Do Corrective Exercise?
Corrective exercises are most effective when done after an activity, in the morning, or at night. For example, after sitting for a long time, many of us struggle to fully stand up straight. We end up walking around hunched over as if the chair is still stuck to us! This posture can increase the risk of falls, pain, and injury.
Doing corrective exercises in the evening helps release tension stored from the day’s activities, while morning exercises prepare your body for the day ahead. You can also perform corrective exercises during the activity itself. This is known as functional posture or applying proper ergonomics. By maintaining a strong relationship with your body’s center, you can move through your daily tasks more efficiently, with greater ease, and less pain.
